Freddie is hard to beat for sheer force of Personality in his performance and playing. Alberts big bends are so powerful, my favorite tone of all three, BB is so distinctive and by all accounts the classiest guy you would ever meet. The Three Kings indeed.

Only mention this because of your response about appreciating BB’s style. I still find Freddie a bit too difficult to articulate as the syncopation and precision of bends is currently beyond my skill level at the moment. Maybe the word I’m looking for is “phrasing”. Hardest thing for me to develop.

Albert is my favorite and I was able to see him several times in San Francisco. He toured a lot with John Mayall in the early 80’s and the bus was always parked on a side street.

I didn’t realize that he and BB used lighter guage strings. That gives me hope.

Great blog, thanks.

Ken

Albert was my favorite also, but the more I get into B.B. King and especially Freddie the more I discover new things that I did not listen to before. There’s so much more than when you listen to things for the first time. When you listen more and go deeper there’s a whole new world of cool blues licks to discover in those songs of B.B. and Freddie and the same goes for Albert.

I grew up listening and playing Stevie’s songs so I’m with you on that.

Thanks for sharing Alex.

Best regards,
Klaus Crow

Albert is my personal favorite of the 3, as I think his licks are most clearly heard in SRV’s style. SRV is my favorite guitarist of all time — to me, he’s like an extension or evolution of Albert (and Jimi, among others). But they’re all great, with their own beautiful tone, licks, etc. — great post. Thank you.
