When I learned the major scale shape, it plays the b on 4th fret 3rd string, but the CAGED d chord also shows the b as open 2nd string. I am guessing there is a reason for the inconsistency and would like to understand the reason behind it, so I know when to use what fingering. Thank you!

Hi Mike,
You can use the G major scale for the entire chord progression if the song is in the key of G, just make sure you’re chord progression consists of chords derived from the G major scale.
