The first thing that you should do when you want to learn how to play is to learn the basics. These include how to hold the guitar correctly, how to hold your hands in proper positions, and how to use your fingers correctly on the fretboard. The best way for you to learn these things is by watching other people playing them on YouTube or through video tutorials on websites like GuitarTricks or JamPlay.

Found your blog today while looking for guitar sight reading info. Was impressed with not only your dexterity in playing, on your youtube video of Five Pentatonic scales, but your skillful presentation of how to play those scales. It is rare to find a teacher of your patience and generosity. The music lives in you and you honor that through encouraging others to let it live in them as well. Thank you. May that generosity return to you many times over in many ways.

Though I began playing guitar more than 50 years ago, I will return to your site to learn more.

Long ago, while in college, I enjoyed being in a band that played for banquets and weddings, but in recent years playing guitar has become my way of meditation. Prayer is another thing entirely, but when I want to meditate I sit down with my friend, my guitar.

If you have not yet read Philip Toshio Sudo’s book, Zen Guitar, or visited his website, you may find some resonance there with your own philosophy.
