After a couple of years of being the de facto manager of my friend’s band I started being a bit interested in learning to play an instrument as well. Perhaps learning from an accredited guitar class would make me be able to be a backup guitarist for jam sessions.

Though this post is a couple of years old, it has helped me so much today. I stopped practicing for a few months while I moved and took care of some life issues. It is easy to feel frustrated with my progress, but this has helped remind me that I just need to start again and get back to basics. Guitar practice is like meditation for me, brings peace and goodness into my day.
Thank you for your encouraging posts.
Bel

Like Tom and Mike I am not so young and just started in March of 2015. I was looking at the 5 pentatonic scales and then read the above article. It really gave me a better understanding of where I want to go with the guitar. I will certainly be reading your other posts.
Thank you.

Hi Curt,

Guitar Tablature is the alternative to standard notation and is fairly easy to read. It shows you exactly on what fret and string you have to play a note.
Tablature also called TABS is a very common used notation for guitar players.

I’m a piano player who’s trying to pick up the guitar, and it’s frustratingly slow :)

Although I can read music quite well, I struggle with the idea of standard notation for guitar music given that there are multiple ways to fret the same note…as opposed to the piano where each note is played by a single key. Any insight you can offer?

And thanks again for all your effort!
